Invercargill City Re-Development is on a Grand Scale

Breathing new life and vibrance to the CBD, Teltrac are proud to work on the new Invercargill city re-development. Stage One is complete with Stage Two planned for the end of the year. This project has involved a dedicated Teltrac team, teaming up with an array of partners and suppliers. Teltrac provided an integrated system for security, wireless networking, and access control across multiple outlets with diverse needs. We also designed and implemented a dedicated network infrastructure for the Building Management System (BMS). This dedicated permanent network makes life much easier during the commissioning stage, as normally a temporary network is used.

The Invercargill city re-development takes up the rectangular block of buildings between Esk Street and Tay Street in Invercargill. The development carefully considered a contemporary, functional centre. The aim was to provide an engaging customer experience, while remaining in scale with the existing and surrounding buildings. The new development preserves and integrates three heritage building facades.

This $180m development welcomed its first customers in July. It really is an impressive project of scale. Once completed, the centre expects to attract more visitors to the region, giving them a reason to stay longer, as well as increasing local spend.

After years of planning and funding issues, the demolition work started back on 23 January 2020. Stage One of the development includes big names such as Farmers, Glassons, Pascoes the Jewellers, 2degrees, Merchant 1948 along with 650 car parks. Stage One ended in July 2022. Invercargill Mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt formally opened the new centre whilst Ngai Tahu Kaumatua’s Michael Skerrett gave the building his blessings.

It has been a hard-won project with a back-drop of construction constraints. Covid 19 and labour shortages meant building work started five months late on Stage One. Project variances included extra cameras and gate controls. The Teltrac team had to work around other contractors and suppliers and juggle key supply and timing issues. It was stressful at times and took the expertise of the team to deliver security, wireless networking, access control integration successfully.

The plan for Stage Two of the project is to open in November 2022. This stage will add a further 4000m2 of shopping area, including food outlets, and 350 additional car parks.

As well as completing the intricate initial projects, Teltrac expertise was called upon for additional work, such as external cameras that will be integrated with the police system.

Thank you to our team Wes, Matt, Sri, Lloyd, James, Kerryn, Nick, Maurits, Brian and Johnny for an excellent project, with more work still to come. It is their privilege to work with Amalgamated Builders Ltd and Invercargill Central Ltd’s project Director Geoff Cotton.

The third stage, which keeps the team involved, is likely to open in late February and will include a link from the Reading Cinemas movie theatre into the development.
